I love that we were asked to work on the renovation of this historic chapel. The direction from the homeowners was to build a new house within the existing fieldstone walls, incorporate modern amenities, and stay true to the original structure. First, we had to bring the structure and utilities up to today’s code, make it comfortable and then build it to last another 200 years. For the roof structure, we used locally sourced posts and beams and custom cut structural panels that allowed us to achieve a finished surface almost immediately. Our HVAC ductwork is buried under the slabs and there is radiant heating in the polished concrete floors. Lastly, it’s the small details that tie back to the house’s beginnings and makes it truly special. We started by fabricating exact replicas of the entry doors, mirrored the detail in the cabinetry & added “1911” to the bath’s hexagonal tile design, paying homage to the chapel’s date of construction.
